ATTRACTIONS EAST CENTRAL SASKATCHEWAN

The beaches at Good Spirit Lake, including this one in the provincial park, are popular summer destinations. The shallow lake has a sandy shoreline, and natural dunes along its east shore.

Saskatchewan's newest city, Humboldt, welcomes you to a little bit of Germany in the heart of the Canadian prairies. Humboldt's strong German and European roots are evident in its well-kept parks and streets, the German-inspired architecture, and local folkart and festivals. When summer comes, the whole community celebrates Sommerfest with ethnic singing, dancing, a Bierfest, arts and crafts, a family day and a 10km "Volksmarch" . With autumn comes Humboldt Oktoberfest Week . Warm up to winter with St. Nikolaus Tag, a one-day celebration featuring a visit from St. Nikolaus, the patron saint of children, as well as a tree-lighting outside City Hall. Popular accordion and polka festivals round out the year.

Discover French Heritage in Zenon Park or Icelandic ways in Wynyard and Foam Lake. Visit the world's tallest Ukrainian lady and sample holopchi in Canora, see a Doukhobour heritage village at Veregin, or take part in a powwow at one of the region's many First Nations communities.

Doukhobor Culture

The National Doukhobor Heritage Village at Veregin will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year, while the Doukhobor Dugout House, a newly designated provincial heritage property near Blaine Lake, draws increasing interest from visitors.

Open year-round, the The National Doukhobor Heritage Village features 11 buildings, including the museum, two prayer homes, a bath house, bakery, barn, blacksmith shop, early homes and a granary.

Visitors to the Doukhobor Dugout House near Blaine Lake are treated to the unique sounds of a cappella singing, in the ravine along the North Saskatchewan River. Located 100km north of Saskatoon, the Dugout House was designated as a Provincial Heritage Site last year for its great symbolic importance and the powerful image it conveys. It represents the adaptive strategies of the Doukhobors, and speaks of challenges met and overcome. The dugout cave was constructed in 1899 and was lived in by nine families until 1904 when log houses were built in a nearby village. www.doukhobordugouthouse.com

NATURE, SPORTS AND OUTDOORS

If nature and wildlife are more to your liking, the East Central Region is also the place to be. Wildcat Hill, a wilderness park in the Pasquia Hills, remains virtually untouched. Mixed-wood forests, marshes and rivers offer breathtaking views to hikers and campers wanting a backcountry challenge.

Last Mountain Lake, is the oldest bird sanctuary in North America. A self-guided tour takes visitors to wetlands favoured by waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds.
