Birds.birds.millions of birds
In the fall, millions of waterfowl flock into the province on their southward journey - creating exceptional opportunities for birding throughout the province. A Saskatchewan birding trail guide will steer you in the right direction to the next spectacular birding locale. Visit the Last Mountain Lake National Wildlife Area (North America's oldest bird sanctuary - established in 1887) - a great location to spy on the elusive whooping crane.
See the Piping Plover and more than 30 other species of shorebirds near the Chaplin Lake area - a Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve Network site. Another Saskatchewan site with the same designation is that of the Quill Lakes marsh network, attracting numerous shorebird species, as well as the Ferruginous Hawk and Peregrine Falcon. If your interest is birds, chances are Saskatchewan may be in your best interests too!
Grasslands National Park
Bison were reintroduced primarily to restore a 'grazing regime' of large herbivores in the park. Secondly, they are symbolic of the prairies and provide visitors a fuller assemblage of species. Thirdly, they will add to the Canadian and greater North American conservation efforts for bison. The first reintroduction was in December, 2005 to a large parcel of the West Block - a location that provides visitor access, a road for management purposes, and size to encourage natural behaviour.

Old Man on His Back Nature Conservancy
Fifty young Plains Bison are roaming their natural prairie habitat again at this prairie preserve near Eastend, Saskatchewan. Released on December 12, 2003, the reintroduction is one of the first in Canada and represents a significant contribution to the conservation of Plains Bison. Once widespread on the Canadian prairies and numbering in the millions, research now indicates that Plains Bison are becoming rare. www.natureconservancy.ca

| Wascana Centre - one of the largest urban parks in North America, Wascana Centre covers 2300 acres, 300 of which are water. The entire park is man-made, in fact, every blade of grass, every tree and hill, as well as the lake and its small islands are all man-made. During the winter months of 2004, an $18 million urban revitalization project took place to increase the depth of the lake for the benefit of the people who visit and enjoy Wascana Centre. Revitalization benefits will include a promenade deck, new island, pedestrian pathways, pedestrian bridge, waterfall, fountain and new aeration system to support fish habitat. | |
