| Airplanes were critical in opening up the North in the 1920's and continue to be the only way to access some of our more remote communities. Coming from outside the Territory, visitors to Yellowknife or Inuvik can fly direct from the gateway cities of Edmonton, Calgary and Whitehorse. Direct flights from these cities are available on First Air, Canadian North, or both, but other carriers also provide service into the Territory. The same airlines travel into both large and small NWT communities, though some of the smaller, more remote communities are only serviced by the smaller airlines that criss-cross the territory, taking off on floats, skis or wheels depending on the terrain and the time of year. Driving The second southern access route enters the NWT from British Columbia. Highway #7, named the Liard Trail, is the gateway to Fort Simpson and the spectacular Nahanni River basin. Highways #1 and #7 form the Deh Cho Connection, an 1,800-km circular journey through Alberta, BC and the NWT. Highlights of the Territorial roadway include waterfalls, mountains and spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities. The adventure of the famous Dempster Highway (#8) doesn't end in the Yukon. From Dawson City, YT, head east.
