Airplanes were critical in opening up the North in the 1920's and continue to be the only way to access some of our more remote communities. Coming from outside the Territory, visitors to Yellowknife or Inuvik can fly direct from the gateway cities of Edmonton, Calgary and Whitehorse. Direct flights from these cities are available on First Air, Canadian North, or both, but other carriers also provide service into the Territory. The same airlines travel into both large and small NWT communities, though some of the smaller, more remote communities are only serviced by the smaller airlines that criss-cross the territory, taking off on floats, skis or wheels depending on the terrain and the time of year. Driving
Three major highways carve paths into and around the Territory. Most people who make the drive to the NWT take the Mackenzie Highway (#1). Known as the Waterfalls Route, roadsters pass five diverse aquatic wonders between the Alberta border and the Town of Hay River. When arriving in Hay River, drivers have three choices. Stay in Hay River, head east toward Fort Smith or continue the adventure north toward Yellowknife, our diamond capital. Those headed toward Yellowknife can look forward to the adventure of a short fairy ride or ice road crossing when the highway meets our mighty Mackenzie River.

The second southern access route enters the NWT from British Columbia. Highway #7, named the Liard Trail, is the gateway to Fort Simpson and the spectacular Nahanni River basin. Highways #1 and #7 form the Deh Cho Connection, an 1,800-km circular journey through Alberta, BC and the NWT. Highlights of the Territorial roadway include waterfalls, mountains and spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities.

The adventure of the famous Dempster Highway (#8) doesn't end in the Yukon. From Dawson City, YT, head east. On the other side of the Arctic Circle and the
glorious Richardson Mountains, drivers will be welcomed into small communities where traditional ways and modern conveniences come together with unique results. Though in the summer the road ends in Inuvik, NT, the fun continues for the winter driver. An ice road runs north of this community, inviting explorers to experience Tuktoyaktuk and the Arctic Ocean.
