The spectacular landscape of the Northwest Territories includes mountains, mighty river valleys, forest and tundra. In each region there’s a super summer show of wildflowers, wildlife and birds. Even the Arctic sea seems to warm to summer, and displays a wealth of sea mammals. Naturalist lodges and outfitters are not alone in the 1.5 million square kilometres (587 thousand square miles) of land and fresh water comprising the NWT. They share an area the size of Texas with approximately 40,000 people, 700,000 barren-ground caribou, 85,000 muskoxen, 26,000 moose, 15,000 wolves, 6,000 polar bears, 10,000 woodland caribou, 15,000 Dall’s sheep, 4,800 grizzly bears, 5,000 black bears, 2,500 bison and many others. The Northwest Territories is one of the few areas in the world where the beluga whales can be seen nursing their young in the shallows of the river deltas. Each spring, millions of songbirds, shorebirds, waterfowl and seabirds from six continents converge on Canada’s North to breed. About half of Canada’s species have been recorded in the NWT - including threatened or endangered species such as the trumpeter swan, American white pelican, whooping crane, peregrine falcon and Eskimo curlew.
