City of Yellowknife
ARTS AND CULTURE |
|
| Northern art, from traditional beading and quill works to paintings and sculptures, is in high demand on southern markets. When you see the fine detail and craftsmanship that is poured into every piece it's no wonder that northern artists and their wares are becoming more popular. Seeing the place where a piece of art is created often provides a deeper insight into and greater connection to a work. While you can find artisans of almost every genre in every part of the NWT, some regions are known for their specialties. For example, birch bark baskets are popular collectibles that are most commonly found in the Deh Cho, while the tiny isolated communities of the Western Arctic are known for their carvers. If there isn't time to visit each region, the major towns and cities have galleries with knowledgeable staff on hand to answer questions and provide background information on favourite styles or pieces. | |
