The park earns its name because it protects one of the world's largest known polar bear maternity denning areas. It includes a large part of the Hudson James Lowlands, a sub-arctic region bordering Hudson Bay that is mostly muskeg and wet peatlands.

Numaykoos Lake Provincial Wilderness Park
the park is characterized by relatively flat terrain and covered by large tracts of peat. Frost polygons, formed by freezing and contraction of the surface, give the ground a distinctive patterned surface. The whitewater portion of the Little Beaver River runs through the park.

An area full of natural wonder and cultural heritage, the Wekusko Falls campground flanks the river. In the 1700s, this area was part of the Upper Track fur trade route, while the lure of gold brought people back to the area in the 1900s.

Asessippi Provincial Park

Criddle / Vane Homestead Provincial Park
From Brandon, follow PR 457 east to PR 340. Continue along PR 340 south. There is an access road approximately 10 kilometres south of Shilo that provides access to Criddle/Vane Provincial Park.

Duck Mountain Provincial Park
Duck Mountain's rolling terrain of woodland, wetlands and valley meadows, is home to a variety of wildlife, including black bear, moose, white-tailed deer, lynx, coyote and wolves.
