Salt Water Fishing
The highly accessible waters of Vancouver Island offer world-class fishing for all five species of Pacific Salmon: Chinook (King), Coho, Pink, Chum, and Sockeye as well as healthy stocks of Steelhead. Abundant stocks of herring and anchovy, a highly successful hatchery system and an aggressive habitat reclamation program ensure healthy returns each year. Anglers favour mooching and trolling, while some enjoy great success casting from strategically placed fishing piers. Vancouver Island’s craggy coastline ensures plenty of protected waters for those who bring their own boats and there is an abundance of fishing lodges with licensed guides ready and willing to hook you the “big one”. In addition to salmon, fishers have great luck bringing in yellow-eye rockfish to 8 kilograms (18 lbs.), lingcod to 20 kilograms (45 lbs.), and halibut to 200 kilograms (440 lbs.).
When planning your next fishing trip to Vancouver Island, be sure to consult the Saltwater Fishing Regulations book for the latest Department of Fisheries and Oceans regulations.
