MUSEUMS & HISTORICAL SITES

Red Deer sits in the heart of the aspen parkland of Western Canada. In the early days this part of Alberta was known as elk country because of the large numbers of elk, or wapiti, in the region. The Cree Indians called the wapiti Waskasoo and gave that name to the river which flows from the Rocky Mountains through the current city and then southeast to the South Saskatchewan River. The early fur traders, many of whom had originally come from Scotland, mistook the Waskasoo for the red deer of their homeland, not an unreasonable error since both the wapiti and the red deer belong to the same species. Hence, the Cree word Waskasoo was translated to “Red Deer” and thus the river and the city got their names.
